Gear I Use: SWCHBAK

Growing up in the UK, neck gaiters were my go-to for staying warm on cold, rainy days. When I moved to sunny San Diego, they became an essential tool for sun protection during runs—a new everyday challenge.

Every run in San Diego requires thoughtful planning and strong sun protection, and my SWCHBAK gaiter is always part of that preparation. Even when I’m less protected than I’d prefer, I can count on my gaiter to keep my neck covered throughout the run.

With a stack of unique, handcrafted designs made locally, I love grabbing one to match my outfit before hitting the trails. Each gaiter feels special, giving me both sun protection and a personal touch that stands out on every run.

Crafted from a premium fabric blend, SWCHBAK gaiters deliver a perfect mix of softness and performance. Designed to excel in any outdoor activity—whether trail running, gravel cycling, or mountain biking—this gaiter ensures maximum comfort while protecting you from the elements.

Its moisture-wicking properties keep you dry and comfortable, while the lightweight material feels gentle on your skin. Whether shielding your neck from harsh sun rays or providing warmth during cooler adventures, this versatile gaiter is built to handle dirt, dust, and sweat with ease.

SWCHBAK was created by founder Michelle Johnson with a focus on quality, originality, and sustainability.

Every gaiter is thoughtfully designed and handmade in San Diego using original patterns by independent artists, ensuring each product is unique.

By supporting SWCHBAK, you’re championing a small, outdoor-focused business that prioritizes creativity and craftsmanship. Whether you’re running trails or exploring the outdoors your way, SWCHBAK gaiters combine functionality, style, and a commitment to the local community.

My favorite design has to be Fernando the Flamingo.

It brings back incredible memories from Ragnar SoCal 2018, where I ran alongside Michelle and an amazing team. During the 250-mile race, we spent hours chasing cutoffs, only to discover we had placed 1st in the mixed ultra category!

Our van mascot was an inflatable flamingo named Fernando, and shortly after that unforgettable race, SWCHBAK released the flamingo-themed gaiter.

I couldn’t resist—it’s been my favorite ever since!
