Living just 10-15 minutes from this trail, I planned my outing for a day when I could finish work early and still catch the daylight.

I arrived at the parking lot a little after 2 PM, finding it pleasantly quiet, with just a handful of cars.

The hike begins with the Way Up Trail, a 1.5-mile stretch that includes the Harmony Grove Overlook—a favorite spot for those seeking a quick escape into nature without committing to the full ascent.

The trail leading to the Maintenance Road is well-maintained and usually bustling with hikers. However, once you veer onto the Chaparral Trail or Equine Incline, the crowd thins out, and you’re likely to find yourself in peaceful solitude for most of the journey.

From the Maintenance Road, I was eager to tack on a few more miles, so I opted for the Equine Incline, a 2.2-mile single-track detour that skirts around the base of Mount Israel.

This trail climbs quickly and steeply up the mountain’s face before rewarding you with a breathtaking view at the peak. At the summit, shaded structures offer a bit of rest and respite—a perfect spot to take a breather.

One of my favorite features at Elfin Forest awaits here: the dog collar memorial. This wooden structure is a touching tribute where people hang the collars of their beloved dogs who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge. At any given time, you’ll find 50 to 100 collars adorning it—a moving reminder of the bond between hikers and their furry companions.

After a short break and a few photos, I made my way back down the Way Up Trail, pacing myself to get back to the car before daylight faded.

It was another fulfilling hike at this local gem—a peak checked off and plenty more adventures on the horizon!
